A type of Buddhist structure, the Vatadage is a piece of architecture unique to Sri Lanka, of which the Medirigiriya Vatadage is extremely famous. This is built around what is known as a ‘stupa’ – a structure containing relics, and they are circular in shape and built on hallowed ground.


The Avukana Buddha Statue in North Central Sri Lanka, stands at a height of more than 40 feet and has been carved out of granite rock face in the 5th Century.  It is a splendid sight to see.


The ancient palace of King Kashyapa, this is a rock fortress that comprised gardens, ponds, moats and ramparts in its heyday, in addition to hand painted frescoes which remain to this day. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is now a major tourist destination.


The fishing town of Negumbo on the western coast of Sri Lanka is a city under modernization, but has still retained some of its quaint roots. Its proximity to the country’s international airport is also a huge plus.
